Tips for feeding your cat

Cats are funny, they make you laugh and they sometimes make you cry but they do allow us to live in their world and seem to expect the best not only from us but from the food we feed them. Finicky is a word that is often used when it comes to serving kitty his/her dinner and sometimes it goes past finicky where your cat will turn up their nose at anything that's served. Here are a few tips on feeding your cat or His Majesty whichever attitude he's wearing for today.

Read labels

The label on your cat food will tell you all you need to know about nutrition for your cat. This label should tell you how much fat, protein, fiber and moisture that it contains. You want to make sure you take care of kitty's health, so read the labels carefully. The label should also tell you what stage of your cat's life the food is meant for such as kittens, growing cats, adult's cats or senior cats. This is very important to know as different stages have different requirements.

Placing the food

The placement of your cat's food and water is more important than you may think. Cats don't like much activity when they are eating so try and place your cat's dishes away from a heavy traffic area. Once you have found a place where your cat can eat and drink in peace, don't change it. A newspaper placed under your cats dish is really helpful with clean up. Always have fresh water available for your cat at all times.

Consistency

Cats appreciate consistency and if you feed your cat during the day make sure you feed them at the same time. Cats like routine and they get very comfortable with it. When you feed your cat always use his name when calling him to eat and try to associate mealtime as a pleasant activity. If you feed your cat dry food it can be left at all times or feed him half in the morning and the other half at night.

Other pet foods

Never feed your cat another pet's food. Cats have unique nutritional needs that only the right cat food can provide. If you have dogs in your home and there is food in their bowls remove the bowls if they haven't eaten all of it.

Bones

Never feed your cat chicken, fish or pork bones they can splinter and cause very serious problems if they are caught in their intestines or throat. They can cut into the stomach or the intestines and cause bleeding.

Milk

Milk is not good for your cat either although there is special cat's milk that can be purchased on the market. Basically your cat doesn't need milk and it may cause him to have diarrhea.
