The thinking that leads to a pre judgment is what leads to fulfilling a prophesy, I'll explain. If society seeks to assume that someone that cannot change and that all is lost for that person, he or she will likely eventually think the same, thus fulfilling what they are presumed to do. This of course is not the case with everyone as some are strong enough to overcome the judgment of society, which we have seen in several now famous people, and maybe even in someone we know.
The honorable Judge Mathis born in Detroit, retired judge and now star of a successful TV court show, was once in jail at an early age and subsequently straightened himself out. He is just one example of many people that, if given the chance, can get their lives right. Society has a history of placing a Scarlett letter upon people with the purpose of uplifting themselves and it has a detrimental effect on the other. If we seek to keep another down they will likely stay down, but if given the chance, many people will shine beyond expectation and show that they can be a productive member of society.
There are also many ex-convicts that now help the government and it's FBI and CIA with projecting potential computer hacking issues, drug cartel Intel and many other areas where past criminals-turned-good can and do help for the betterment of us all. Of course in society we have had, and will continue to have, the people with social and mental disorders that have be put away forever or monitored in hospitals, but those are just a few of many who otherwise could be rehabilitated. Wrong doing is not something in which a person has to be judged for life if a person shows remorse or the need and want for change in his or her life.
Many people don't think about their lives and the whole future during one event and one emotional moment, and this thinking also runs in circumstantial and situational circumstances. Emotions play a big part of what us humans do and if we succumb to one of those emotions things can happen, some of which we, or society may not approve of. But this does not mean that the person is inherently evil and forever a problem for society, but maybe they need a wake up call. The responsible among us of course know that we must think before we act, but there are some that may not and do things outside of our social norms. To an extent this can be forgivable if the person is willing to conform to a level that is within the law and within the norms of sociology.
The message in this is rehabilitation before incarceration. If we sought to do this we would have less recidivism rates in our prisons and thusly less prisons and more schools.
