You know about the cable cars and the Golden Gate Bridge, but what else is there to do and see in San Francisco, the City by the Bay? Here are a few attractions you might not have considered.
- California Academy of Sciences: Newly remodeled the ecologically friendly site located in Golden Gate Park has something for every taste. From the Steinhart Aquarium to the Planetarium to dinosaur bones and a rainforest exhibit complete with live butterflies, learning science was never more enjoyable. Specialty tours are also available. The Platinum behind the scenes tour with special access to the rainforest and the Nightlife Tour which includes an open bar before the tour offer the opportunity to view collections not available to the public. If finances are tight, there are a limited number of free general admissions available to the general public the 3rd Wed of every month.
- Golden Gate National Recreational Area: Numerous hiking trails for every skill level and stunning panoramic views, the Presidio, a former military base, Alcatraz, one of the most famous of all prisons and numerous nude beaches can all be found within this National Park . While the nude beaches are not government approved, there are several locations where officials generally don't hassle those who wish to sunbathe in the buff. For complete directions to these beaches, check out the San Francisco Bay Guardian web site at sfbg.com.
Alcatraz is only accessible by boat tour and prices vary. Boats depart from Pier 39 and can sell out in advance. Once you get to the island you can take the self guided audio tape tour or wander around the island. Occasionally former guards or inmates will be on hand to talk about their experiences on The Rock.
- Union Square: The heart of San Francisco's shopping district with more than 2000 shops and stores nearby, this is the 3rd largest shopping area in the US. From high end stores like Nieman Marcus, Gumps and Tiffany's to large department stores like Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and Macys, to the Apple Store and Lush, there is something for every taste. There are also many fine art galleries and theaters nearby so you will not be at a loss of entertainment. Discount same day tickets are available at the TIX booth in Union Square.
- Haight Ashbury: The seminal cross-roads for the 1960's free love revolution is now home to many trendy boutiques and art galleries. Check the Upper Playground which covers an entire city block on Fillmore Street and features the artwork
