Short stories: The unlucky winner

They all stood stiffly in a complicated row of withering thoughts and heights. Each man, not wanting to divulge anything other than that which was necessary, waited restlessly in a line dripping with mixtures of intoxicating combination of sweat. On a whole they were a very good set of individuals; she had, had good taste. But the fact that there were forty-seven lined up against the bricks made the whole thing seem kind of foul - from both sides.

The majority were on the tallish side with the definite silhouette of a man. Some were shorter and softer than their peers but still passed the unsympathetic masculinity test. Two were defiantly in disguise for the sport of it all and could have walked at any given moment. They had been her lovers for fun. When the evidence cups were distributed and the orders were placed for despotic action, they both balked and whispered together in the corner - like girls.

There was no chance for privacy and DNA was collected in a rough, somewhat military style manner. Most proudly demonstrated their ability by reaching personal bests on cue. Some needed more time and had to turn and face the wall to concentrate on their work in hand. Four failed altogether and had to provide samples in other ways.

When she entered the room everything stopped. Even those just finishing up froze like victims of Simon says. Unconsciously, each defendant stood up straighter and puffed up like a prized cock. Habitual schoolboy shenanigans, the ones you find casually everywhere, crashed and burned fast into the carpet. All eyes were on her.

Personal conundrums trumped everything else as each man wanted to be the winning stud and the protected looser. All wanted to swank over their triumphant blast and too wanted to run like hell. No one could have both.

She was cold to everyone but her prized two who received a slight twinkle and beam when she studied the line. She was disappointed in herself. She had thought she had chosen much better. The light of day proved to her conscious otherwise.

Blaming her choices on the wine she shrugged, sneered, and passed into the back room. She would see the results first, she would pounce second, and then she would drain the lucky bastard of everything he currently possessed and demand more when she licked his bowl clean.

He was literally at her beck and call for the next quarter of a century, she played this game well. This was in fact her second time around in this schoolyard as the money
