It wasn't where I meant to be
The edges of my world
Bound up with concrete
And skirted by surveyors lines.
It wasn't where I meant to be
Where my horizons are obscured
With buildings large and small
Reaching into evening sunset.
It wasn't where I meant to be
Birdsong obscured by traffic noise
Sirens into the night no whipoorwill
Radios and amplifyers blaring.
It wasn't where I meant to be
But it is where I am.
Someday, perhaps, I'll walk
Past city limits and go home.
