Poetry: Mythology

Anubis

In the shadows, catlike Bast
hands him human hearts
letting their red stickiness baptize her hands.
Bathed in the blood of mortals, she
holds council with the great
jackal-headed god
as he weighs each soul
on a set of golden scales.
Somewhat like the ones Zeus held,
when, looking down from Olympus
He weighed each army
Their courage, their piety
And the weight of Troy
Sank down into
The bloodstained earth.
Or the scales of Libra
Shining in the darkened sky.
Whispering human fates
On the night wind
