Magnesium is a very important mineral that every cell in the human body needs. Half of the magnesium our body gets is stored in cells. The other half is stored in our bones. The human body is hard at work in maintaining a healthy magnesium level. The human body needs magnesium to perform different functions. If our magnesium level falls we suffer from magnesium deficiency.
Magnesium deficit is capable of causing a loss of appetite, disorientation, confusion, psychotic behavior, depression, tremors, convulsions, numbness, tingling, muscle cramps, widening of blood vessels, coronary spasms, irregular heart beat and nervous system irritability.
One cause of magnesium deficiency is that people are not getting enough magnesium. Another cause is that magnesium is being depleted in excess amounts through urine. Another cause of magnesium deficiency is a disorder of the gastrointestinal system which keeps the body from adequately absorbing magnesium.
Magnesium deficiency can also be caused by diuretics in treatment which can cause a depletion of magnesium in excess. Another cause for the disorder can be diabetes that is not under control which can result in excessive loss of magnesium in urine, which will ultimately deplete the magnesium stores. Alcohol consumption is also related to excessive loss of magnesium and a high intake of alcohol can result in the deficiency of magnesium. Magnesium deficiency can also be caused by diarrhea and vomiting.
While magnesium deficiency is a dangerous disease, it is possible to avoid such a disorder. You can avoid this disorder by eating dark leafy green vegetables and five servings of fruits and vegetables or more everyday. Other foods that are high in magnesium are rice, oats, wheat, etc. There are also supplements that are a high source of magnesium. They are sold over the counter and also sold at supermarkets and drugstores.
If you are suffering from magnesium deficiency, consult your doctor for a way to get your magnesium levels regulated. Magnesium can also be a major cause in many of the common health problems. Magnesium deficiency can be related to problems such as ADD, (attention deficit disorder) psychological problems, hearing loss, menstrual cramps, muscle cramps, premature birth, seizures, asthma, anxiety, psychiatric disorders, etc. Magnesium deficiency should not be ignored because the effects it has on an individual can be dangerous. Magnesium deficiency can also slow down your healing and can increase the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks. Magnesium is said to be important for the lungs and is now considered for asthma treatment. Magnesium is a very important mineral that the body shouldn't go without.
