Everyone knows the recommendation, eat five servings a fruit every day. Experts say that it will benefit you as far as your overall health goes. But what are the exact benefits, how can we expect our health and our life to improve from this plan? What is described below are some of the benefits of eating five servings of fruit every day.

Some of the benefits of eating five servings of fruit every day are the prevention of certain life threatening diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, etc. Some studies have shown that a slight increase in the portion of fruit consumed can lower the risk of coronary heart disease by up to four percent. There is also overwhelming evidence that an increase in fruit intake will help lower blood pressure. Another health benefit of eating 5 a day is that it delays the development of cataracts, and it will reduce the symptoms of asthma, enabling you to breathe better for longer periods between attacks. 5 a day can also improve bowel function, lowering the risk of certain disease like constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. If you have diabetes, five servings of fruit a day can help you manage it.

Eating fruit and vegetables is also beneficial to increasing your intake of fiber. You can also reduce your intake of fat and of course help you maintain a healthy weight and body fat level. It can also lower your intake of refined sugars and lower your risk of tooth decay.

Fruits and vegetables have a wide range of vitamins, minerals and other highly valuable nutrients. Increasing your intake of fruit and otherwise decreasing your intake of processed, unhealthy foods can actually prolong your life span and slow down aging. Their nutritious make up brings their health beneficial level far beyond that of synthetic dietary supplements that contain vitamins and minerals that are isolated. Some studies suggest that supplements may actually be more harmful than they are helpful.

Increasing your fruits and vegetable intake to five servings a day will prove to be beneficial in the short term and in the long term. People who consume more fruits and vegetables tend to liver fuller, healthier, disease free lives than people who consume less fruits in a day and more processed and fried food from restaurants and convenient stores. While these foods may have an addicting taste to them, the health benefits of those types of foods are very small compared to the health benefits of fruits and vegetables
