How to pick your college classes

Selecting your college classes can seem like an overwhelming process, but it's really not that difficult. If you take it one step at a time, college course selection will seem like a piece of cake! Here are some tips on making that process go smoothly and free of stress!

First, for the college freshman, many of your classes are already decided for you. These are called general education classes, and are the building blocks for your entire education. The general education classes usually include basic composition and history and science classes. Rather than stressing over which classes to take, all you have to decide is when to take each class. And again, for the first semester freshman, even the schedule is usually decided for you. Basically, the new freshmen get whatever is left over. Don't be discouraged if you don't have a schedule you like. Next semester is always around the corner, and you will have more freedom and flexibility with each semester under your belt.

Second, don't be afraid to seek out the advice of your advisor. That's what he or she is there for. Your advisor will tell you which major courses to take and when to take them. Your advisor is also likely to be your professor for several of your classes, so he will be able to give you specific information about each class. The more your advisor gets to know you, the more your advisor will be able to help you plan a schedule that best fits your needs and strengths.

Third, always allow yourself to have fun. Every semester doesn't have to be filled with your major courses. If you take nothing but your major courses, you might get burnt out. Find a class that allows you to develop a hobby, like photography or sewing. Choose a fun class that won't overwhelm you with homework. A dance class is a great way to have fun and get some exercise! Whatever you choose, the main thing is to have fun. College doesn't have to be all books and notes and lectures. You can even take this as an opportunity to explore a different career path. If you've always wondered what it might be like to work for NASA instead of sitting behind the desk as an accountant, then go take that Astronomy class. The sky is the limit! (No pun intended!)

Lastly, talk to upper-classmen and find out which classes they recommend. They are also an excellent source for finding out which professors are the best at teaching specific subjects. Don't necessarily choose a class because the professor is "easy" or "lenient". Some of the greatest professors are the tough ones. After all, this is your career path we're talking about. This is nothing to take lightly!

So relax, have fun, and listen to your advisor and peers. Class selection will be a breeze if you implement these simple tips!
