Should America attack Iran?

Thomas Sowell wrote, "But if the worst that Barack Obama does is ruin the economy, I will breathe a sigh of relief. He is heading this country toward disaster on many fronts, including a nuclear Iran, which has every prospect of being an irretrievable disaster of almost unimaginable magnitude. We cannot put that genie back in the bottle - and neither can generations yet unborn. They may yet curse us all for leaving them hostages to nuclear terror."

Let's try to understand the picture Sowell is painting. A team of suicide killers enters the U.S. and assembles nuclear bombs, and detonates one near a major city. Once Iran knows how to make nuclear bombs, they will study delivery systems. Suicide bombers are far better than missiles, aircraft or submarines due to the difficulty in detection and prevention.

MAD, Mutual Assured Destruction, the policy that successfully kept the U.S.S.R. at bay for decades, will not work. America has always feared Russia, and has spent huge sums of money and research towards defensive and offensive systems against Russia. Although recently people feel that the old animosity is passing away, Russia may be nearing its dream of destroying America using Iran as a proxy. The recent news item supports this, "For the first time, Russia and Iran will hold a joint naval maneuver in the Caspian Sea."

Russia enjoys extensive trade ties with Teheran and has been opposed to imposing further sanctions on Iran over its uranium enrichment program.

Moscow is building Iran's first nuclear power plant in Bushehr, has provided Teheran with weapons and needs Iranian assistance on the Caspian Sea and other regional issues.

Let us say that a nuclear bomb goes off in America. Future historians will curse our present political leaders for failure to prevent this horrendous disaster. People discuss who is doing better in the polls, and which party will likely win the next election. Politicians need to be aware of not only the next election, but also their good names in the foreseeable future.

To this day, we all remember George Washington for the great things he did. People will forever remember Adolf Hitler for the very great evil he did. How will people remember Senator Frank Lautenberg, Senator Robert Menndez, and Congressman Rush Holt, my representatives?

To begin, we need to reeducate the public on the nature of nuclear war. This subject was prevalent in the 1950's, but since then has all but disappeared. We all need to understand and to fear the details.
