In the world of sports there runs a definitive line between the power sports and finesse sports. Volleyball, though, stands out as a hybrid, incorporating the necessarily explosive elements of the aerobatic spike, or the straining dig, and the sublime perfection of the set. How does one position themselves to make the cut in a competitive volleyball team? What can make you stand out as worthy of that coveted position on the squad? Although there are a number of factors that can play into the decision-making process of a JV or varsity coach that may feel arbitrary, there are at least a few that are universal and will grab a discerning coach's eye.
The first is the most universal and overarching in scope, spanning any competitive sport. That is the outward manifestation of one's inner drive. That voice inside that pushes one a little farther. This inner spirit is apparent quite early on in tryouts. The player who pushes just a little farther in drills, or works through the burn of bleacher runs with a spirited determination. The player who keeps keen attention to instruction and adjustment from a coach, maintains eye contact, and applies him/herself. These are the players who hold the attention of the coaches. A smart coach wants - and often needs - the role-playing, hard-working players and will seek them out first from the crowd.
Second is the necessary skills. These often distinguish a varsity player from the ranks of the JV. Since volleyball is one of the greatest of the finesse sports, there are no shortcuts here. As the adage goes, "practice, practice, practice." Pepper, do setting drills, run side to side digging drills, or turn and burn workouts. If possible borrow as many volleyballs as you can and save the time of shagging till you are worn out. If you have access to a beach, work on your two-man game and quickly find your weakness and strengths. Train with others better than yourself whenever possible. This refining will move an average player through the ranks to varsity in reasonable time.
Although there are other contributing factors to make the cut, outstanding motivation and refining through undaunted practice are the hallmarks of a varsity volleyball player. Keep these in mind and always enjoy the process as that's the soul of any sport, and you will find yourself on the varsity list in no time.
