Okay, here's the deal. Everyone wants to know, what's the secret to landing a job once you find an opening in a company? As a retail store manager, I see all kinds of people with all kinds of approaches and attitudes searching for employment. Very rarely do I see anyone who absolutely stands out to me. I've read a few articles on "getting a job" and interview tips but I don't think they really tell you what you need to know. I mean, of course you are going to be on your absolute best when you're at an interview but there are a lot of things that are not necessarily common sense.
First of all, it's much easier to score a job if you want the specific job you're applying for, rather than applying for everything that comes along. It's understandable to do the latter, with the unemployment rate what it is, but try to be genuinely interested in the position. Trust me - it helps. I can tell for the most part from talking to someone who is doing nothing more than asking for a job application whether or not they really want the job.
Next, even as early as acquiring an application, remember to present yourself well. If you walk in slowly or unenergetically, we on the management side of things tend to assume that you'll be that way in the workplace. We don't know you as well as YOU know you. You may be the most enthusiastic employee out there, but it's very easy to give the wrong impression inadvertently. Oh yeah, and never, EVER, call a place to ask if they are hiring. Anyone who calls my store to ask if we are hiring will be told "no" without any questions.
So by now you know that you want to come off as someone who can do the job with enthusiasm but what about your appearance? I can simplify this for you - Ladies, it's great that you think you're the cutest thing since baby seals but we want to know that you are more interested in looking professional than picking up a date. Dress nicely but be modest. Men - leave the cocky swagger at home. We want people who can get the job done, not people who feel like they have something to prove. And to both genders, remember, if you think you look trendy, you probably don't look professional. Do what you have to in order to come off as a respectable individual. Personally, I hate shaving and covering up my extensive tattoo work but I wouldn't be where I am if I didn't, now would I?
The last item to address: the application follow-up. Don't call. It makes you look lazy. You should always visit in person to ask about your application. Be persistent and polite. The added bonus to checking up in person is that it makes the members of management familiar with your face. People in general tend to stick with things they are familiar with, so get your face out there!
There are always going to be jobs and positions that are outside of your qualifications but I am a firm believer that there is work to be done and you are the person to do it! Now get out there and get hired!
