What are action sports?

Every single person has his or her opinion on what is an action sport. Some might think golf is an action sport just for the simple fact that missing one little put could cost someone the game. What makes a sport an action sport? Millions of fans? How about injuries? I don't know about you butI have heard of people getting injured while fishing.

In ancient times the only types of sports that had then were Track & Field sports. People would travel hundreds of miles to just watch these sports. Even today the tradition lives on. The sports back in the ancient times are now the Olympics. People travel all over the world to compete and watch their country. Does this mean that is an action sport? Men back in those times where tough, they could basically do anything. If one of them broke a hand they would still compete, this sounds like some serious action.

Today, some might think that a sport that gets your heart rate up and always has you on the edge or your seat is an action sport. Examples of these sports are soccer and football. Both of these sports are exciting in their own way. Football you have people constantly being hurt and knocked out. Soccer you have thousands of die hard fans and soccer players who are tough as nails.

Now here is one of the biggest debates going on now a days, is cheerleading an action sport? Is it even a sport? What defines something as a "sport?" Some think that if it is the Olympics then it is a sport. But there's a problem, football isn't in the Olympics, yet it is a sport. Many think that for it to be a sport, there has to be some sort of prize or competition. This is basically what cheerleading is. Most cheerleading squads travel around to different places to compete. So this must mean that it is a sport.

There is one thing that we forget when we try to call a sport an action sport. All sports are action sports. It is as simple as that. Every sport leaves their audience on the edge of their seats and makes their heart almost burst. Just because some of them don't involve fights or broken bones does not mean it isn't an action sport. As long as their is competition, prizes, upsets, and thousands of fans, it should be an "action sport."
