Houston, Texas is a sports lover's dream city. Visitors to this fabulous city will enjoy finding as many as six professional sports teams. The sports fanatic can find something to entertain and delight no matter the time of year. Upon arrival in the city, guests will find the Houston Texans football team, the Houston Astros baseball team, the Houston Rockets basketball team, the Houston Aeros hockey team, the Houston Dynamo soccer team and the Houston Energy women's football team. So ... come on sports fans, enjoy Houston and a game.
THE HOUSTON TEXANS FOOTBALL TEAM
The Houston Texans are the city's only National Football League (NFL) football team. The Texan's have been entertaining Houston fans since 2002. With the departure of the Houston Oilers for Tennessee in 1997, Houston was left without a major NFL team until Bob McNair stepped-up and received the go-ahead for the Houston Texan's, and since 2002, they have not disappointed. Their level of play has continued to improve from year to year to the delight of their many fans. Also, the fabulous Houston Texan's Cheerleaders will never disappoint, for an additional bit of entertainment at the game. The Houston Texan's play in the state-of-the art Reliant Stadium, which offers a natural grass field with a retractable roof, and 1.9 million square feet of space. The team is part of the NFL's AFC South and are still in the hunt for an NFL title.
THE HOUSTON ASTROS
For the baseball lover, the Houston Astros satisfy. Playing at Minute Maid Park, the team, that started as the Houston Colts, began play in 1962, and have been entertaining sports fans ever since. Owned currently by Drayton McLane, the team has been the home to baseball greats like Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott, Cesar Cedeno, Craig Reynolds, Jose Cruz, Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio. The Houston Astro's home is at the fabulous Minute Maid Park, which is located in downtown Houston. Minute Maid Park sports a retractable roof and, due to its location on the old Union Station, guest during games are entertained by a replica of a 19th century locomotive and linked coal tender, which runs along a roof track on the west side of the ballpark. The team has appeared only once in the World Series in 2005 but, they have held numerous playoff appearances in 1980, 1981, 1986, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2004, and 2005. The Houston Astros are part of the MLB's Central division.
