* Brief History

The History of the prestigious Florida Museum of Natural History explains most part of the function and purpose of the Museum.

In 1891, Frank Pickel, a professor at Florida Agriculture College (would later be attached to the University of Florida), for research and other purposes, acquired some natural collections of the human structure, and other natural elements.

History reveals that these collections were very helpful at the then Florida Agriculture College, and other lecturers at the college appreciated this kind of research method of using natural collections to enhance teaching and research. As the years went by, the collections increased, and when the Florida Agriculture College was to form part of the University of Florida that was being launched, the collections became part of the beginning Florida State Museum.

Florida Museum of Natural History stands out when it comes to collections of Natural History. The museum collections are grouped into different categories from Archaeology, Fossils, to Natural Science collections. For research purpose, Florida museum of Natural history has countless helpful collections.

The Archaeology collections consist of the Zooarchaeology, Archaeobotany, and the like. And even archaeological collections of Florida and Latin America.

The Museum's official website provides well-detailed listings of these collections, how they are maintained, how they are accepted, and other policies.

Florida Museum of Natural History claims to hold as much as 20 million specimens of Natural History collections.

* Admission

Like most museums, admission into the Florida Museum of Natural history is free. Donations are however accepted.

You can visit the museum from Mondays to Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 1pm to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

The museum is maintained and supported through many ways; through donations, and some shopping done inside the Museum. And like other museums, Florida Museum of Natural History gets supports from their Membership Plans / Levels: the basic MembershipPlus, Membership Associates, and the highest level, the Curate Society. Each membership level comes with its benefits according to the strength of it.

Above many things, the Florida Museum of Natural history has many halls / spaces available for rental. The Galleria, Lucille T. Maloney Classroom, and more are all available for rental, even the full museum. They all come with their rental fees and availability period, though mostly discounted for affiliates of the University of Florida.

Florida Museum of Natural History is worth the visit.
