Starting your own data entry company at home

by Natalia Jones

The internet is a portal to millions of job opportunities. Everyday jobs are posted and filled all without ever bringing the two parties face to face. This concept lures many to research the possibility of starting their own data entry company at home. Sure as technology advances some of the data entry functions are made obsolete. Many forms are now scanned and the information is read and coded into the system. Undoubtedly though there is still a vast demand for data entry professionals.

How then do you harness this knowledge and tap into the flow of income by taking advantage of some these job opportunities from the comfort of your own home? Well, if you are interested in starting your own data entry company you should take a look at the following tips.

1. Don't quit your day job just yet. It is best to take your time researching the jobs you can reasonably complete on your own before you hand in your letter of resignation. You would need to calculate how many of these jobs you would need to complete in order to replace your current income. You should also roughly estimate how long each job should take you to complete to average the number of hours you would have to put in to make the same income as you do now.

2. Don't rely on one income source. Unfortunately the rules are different in the real world versus the virtual world. In the real world, one employer might be able to satisfy your basic needs, but you should never rely solely on one virtual employer for your income. It is best to have two or three income providers to cover yourself from the risk of one simply shutting down or changing payment policies among other issues.

3. Take on a few part time jobs. In order to build speed and proficiency you should try to secure a few jobs before leaving your current employment. This will familiarize you with the submission requirements as well as expose you to handling a client in the virtual environment.

4. Develop a website. You should have a virtual presence that speaks to your level of professionalism as well as the services you provide. This is very important, since your potential employers are unable to meet with you so your website should give them the assurance that you are unable to provide in person, virtually. The website should also make it easy to contact you in case someone would like to hire your services or ask you a question.

5. Set up your home office. Your work area must be a place that you are comfortable and free from distractions. It is best if you have a designated room that you could allocate to a home office, but any space that can be reasonably private and quite should suffice. You must also be sure to keep it organized. Cluttering your work space is a recipe for disaster as soon you will not be motivated to spend much time in the disorganized mess, and your income will suffer.

6. Market your business. Just because you are a virtual data entry professional dose not mean that you cannot target companies in your area. Many people ignore this aspect of business, but you can actually go in to local businesses and offer your virtual services in person. They may consider you simply because you had the nerve to walk in to them and submit a proposal. You can do the work virtually but if the need arises that you must make a site visit you are able to do this because you are actually based in the area.

7. Stick with it. Probably the most important factor is the determination to succeed. You must have the drive to wake up every day and bid for jobs and actually do the work. The income you take in every month will depend solely on those efforts so you have to be motivated to perform.

Starting your own data entry service at home may sound too good to be true, but it takes a lot of effort and hard work to become a full time endeavor. Those that make it to the end of the road though, are never sorry they put in the work.
