Poetry: Soldiers

by Cynthia Jones

A Soldier Mourns His Fallen Comrade

A soldier mourns his fallen comrade
by placing a poppy on his grave,
he stands back and salutes
tries his best to be brave.

He can't help the tears from flowing
down his weathered cheeks,
he says a prayer for his friend
the wind stills, as he speaks.

"My friend, my brother
I do miss you so,
remember when we used to pull pranks
all those years ago?"

"Your family misses you
and my friend, so do I,
I think of the things we did back then
some memories make me cry."

"I wish I was there to save your life
the day the bombs fell,
but, I stand before your grave
listening to the tolls of the bells."

"My friend, my brother,
God, now looks after you,
I am sorry, you had to leave
but, there was nothing I could do."

The Veteran wipes his eyes
and backs up from the grave,
gives another salute to his friend
thanking him for the life he gave.
