Once you've seen Fisherman's Warf and driven your car up Lombard Street, head to these attractions that might not be on the group tour. Taking the trolley to North Beach is an excellent way to see the sights. North Beach is the Little Italy of the city. If you're thirsty, head to Vesuvio. This saloon was a favorite of Jack Kerouac and other beat poets of that generation. Belly up to the bar, hang your coat under the bar and enjoy the company.
There are a number of restaurants in North Beach. Trattoria Contadina is a local hideaway. This Italian restaurant is famous for their impeccable service and mouth-watering dishes. Have the Pepperoni Arrostiti; it will change your life. If you're travelling on the cheap, Burgermeister has award-winning burgers at reasonable prices.
Union Square is an essential San Francisco site. Head to the Stockton Street Pavilion, grab a pastry and sit on the steps. It is a remarkable place to people watch and grab a break before heading off to the numerous alleys.
The Irish Bank Bar and Restaurant is a little-known secret among San Franciscans. Pull up a seat on the patio and enjoy a pint while you dine on traditional Irish cuisine. For an upscale meal in Union Square, head toward the E&O Trading Co. The Supper Club is a circus experience with diners lazily lounging on big white beds. Once the dishes are cleared, this place turns into a sultry nightclub when the witching hour begins.
Union Square has a number of hotels and it centrally located. The Orchard Hotel is a new favorite in San Francisco. The rooms are luxurious and a nice retreat from a day of sightseeing. If you blew all your cash in China Town, you'll enjoy Elements. Elements Hotel is mostly an upscale hostel. The rooms at Elements are affordable, clean and you're sure to meet some interesting people.
Twin Peaks are the outdoor experience that many out-of-towners don't have. Walk up and get a panoramic view of the city. If you're looking for the local thing to do, go to Bi Rite Market on 18th and buy some picnic fixings before you head to Twin Peaks. If you're not the picnic type, Delfina Restaurant is a local food spot with gourmet pizzas and an extensive wine list.
Castro Street is a destination for people from all over the world. The Castro Theatre still shows a range of movies from silent to contemporary to cult classic, so if you're on time for a film and in the mood, grab some popcorn and enjoy. Walk down to Philz Coffee. They make each cup one at a time.
