How to level uneven spots in a lawn

You have worked so hard on your lawn keeping crab grass at bay, maintaining just the right PH balance, and your yard looks awesome! In fact your lawn is the talk of all your neighbors, but as you look out at your beautiful lush lawn you notice something you never seen before, you notice that you have some dips in your dazzling lawn. What do you do now?

This is simple enough to cure and your lawn will be stunning once more. Your two options are: one leave it alone, nothing in nature is exactly the same or two, level it off.

Leveling it off is not as hard as it sounds all you simply have to do is to fill the dip up with dirt or soil, just slightly higher than the ground in which you want it level with.

Then you will want to tamp the ground where you just filled with either your foot or you can buy an actual tamper at any home improvement store. By tamping you are getting any air pockets and soft spots that are in the new dirt out. By not doing this step you would eventually have to redo the area, and haven't you already worked hard enough.

Next you need to treat the new dirt with a weed preventative and let the area rest for a week. If any weeds are going to grow you will know and you can just simply pluck it out before laying the seeds for your grass.

In one week fertilize the area with a phosphorous rich fertilizer. The phosphorous will help stimulate the growth of new grass roots.

Now you are ready for either grass seed or sod. Sod is a little more expensive but you will have instant grass. Grass seed takes a little longer but is less expensive.

In either case you will want to match your existing grass to the new grass that you will be putting in. Take a piece of grass with you to your local grass nursery for a better match.

When you lay the sod you may have to pull up a small amount of existing grass to blend the new sod a little better.

Laying grass seed is a little less work. Sprinkle 15 to 20 seeds per square inch, then sprinkle some around the area so that your grass will blend nicely. Gently cover the seeds just enough so that they don't blow away and the birds don't eat them. To really make them stay in place you may want to step on the ground.

Within two weeks you will have an attractive lawn once again.
