Freelance journalism can be a very rewarding career, whether you're a stay at home parent, former newspaper/magazine reporter or you've decided to be self-employed. There are numerous positive aspects to this career.
You can write about any subject you like, whether it be horse-riding, fishing, hunting or video games, the range is huge. If you're interested in a sport, you can dedicate all your time to it and not get bogged down by writing what your previous editor required. Many on-line writing websites let you submit content about any subject you wish, which gives you more opportunity to publish.
Being able to stay at home and not drive to the office can make life a lot easier. You can set up your own workstation at home and feel more comfortable in your surroundings. You can even work your own hours, whether it be in the morning or at night, the choice is yours. If you decide to take a break, you can take one anytime you feel the need, which is less stressful than regular journalism employment.
When writing jobs come along, it's your decision to accept or reject them. If your workload is too heavy at the time, you have the opportunity to pick and choose your work. Being an employed journalist doesn't let you do that; again you would have had to obey your editors instructions, limiting your creativity to the one newspaper or magazine.
There is a large range of work with freelance journalism, providing endless opportunities. You can cover news, preview big events, interview personalities, write biographies and much more. If you are involved with a local club, you can offer your services to write their monthly newsletters, displaying news and club happenings. Creating press releases can be another service you can provide to your club as freelancer, promoting upcoming events.
Marketing your own work can also be fun by promoting work on your website to friends, family and customers. Social networking is a good way to increase article views by posting links on websites such as Facebook, Bebo or Myspace and much more. You can post and provide your work anywhere websites will publish it, enhancing your writing portfolio for that next big writing job.
Overall the opportunities are massive and if you have motivation and a positive attitude, you can produce almost anything. If you are freelancing along side your everyday job, it can provide a healthy second income for the future.
