Why is it hard to get your life organized?

Why is it hard to get your life organized? Why? In an age of technological advancements - PDAs, cell phones, laptops, notebooks, wireless, and wired connectivity, why? In an age of storage systems, self-help books, do-it-yourself, therapists, counselors, and coaches why is it you cannot get your life in any semblance of order. Why? I would like to suggest three possible reasons and ways to break through these barriers.

One reason is that you simply are comfortable in your clutter. If this is the case you have to ask yourself, "why even bother to change my life?", "What is prompting me to change what, for me, has always worked?" Are external pressures from colleagues, family or friends the reason? What is the goal of this protracted process called reorganization? There has to be a goal beyond the feel-good accomplishment of the moment. What appears as chaos and confusion to others may actually make sense to you. Reorganization for the sake of reorganization won't be successful.

A second reason is that the process of reorganization seems to be a daunting task. You've decided that you need it, now what? How do you begin to tackle the problem of disorganization? Its simple, Simplify! Start by defining the goal of the reorganization. What does an organized area look like? What benefits and improvements will be gained from clearing the clutter? Answering these questions will focus your mind on what needs to go and what will stay. One method that works involves removing everything either out of the room or placing it in the middle of the room until the room is cleared as you want. After that sort and remove things that don't or can't go back into the room. If it doesn't have a designated space in the room it is tossed. Don't worry about tossing away memories; memories are the product of the heart, not found in a clump of wood or a useless relic, so you can hold on to memories, they won't fade and can't be taken away! Now get rid of the junk!

A third reason that reorganization is so hard is because reorganization is not priority. So how do you make it a priority? You just do! Set a deadline and stick to it. Projects that are drawn out tend to become endless. Invite a trusted friend over to keep you on track and to give you a realistic view of grandma's seatless chair. Start reorganizing your life as a priority. If you start you will finish!
