It was once true the average American watches more than 2.5 hours worth of TV a day. It is what numerous people do when they come home from a work after a long day. The exact way it decides the place in our lives is dependent upon the person's use of technology. Now most television networks broadcast all of it's news and shows on it's web site to increase traffic and you can very easily get news just by going to the web. Where on the web you might ask? Well, just about every newspaper has one so you can get the most up to date news that way, same thing with the television and radio stations. There are even more news outlets which are web only. Also every single major network has its own web site so you can get the same major stories from there and sometimes then some depending on the news organization and how dependent they are on the web.but there are other factors as well.
Back in the old days most families would watch television while they were watching dinner and maybe watch a couple of other shows in the evening but that's about it. If the President was on then everybody had to watch period. Then cable and satellite companies started to pop up and people flocked to them like they do to Wal-mart on Christmas Eve. A lot more started to come on, such as college and professional sports along with numerous hit television shows. As they came on people watched.
In a matter of fact, it got to the point that the stereotypical male would come home after a long day of work and the first thing that he would do is turn on the TV and watch the news or sports if there were any on. While housewives stayed home they watched soap operas and maybe the mid day news by the local television stations. However, as this happened another trend started to happen. Males started to do less around the house and the wives often complained about the lack of help they get from the husbands around the house because they spend so much time in front of the TV.
One of the saddest things which has happened as a result of the television industry is that kids who lack social skills and older people who can't get out much become extremely attached to it to the point that it becomes their only source of entertainment. They would have no connection the outside world. Just like Americans can't get around in the majority of cities without a car, without the net and TV they have no connection to the outside world (the one exception to this might be if you have cell phone with extreme web surfing capabilities).
Over the last 30 years TV has become a dominant factor in our lives. In order for us to go back any other way we literally would have to revert 30 years.
