A healthy marriage is a like a house built on strong foundation. It can endure all odds. And the foundation of marriage is made up of things like love, faith, understanding, acceptance, forgiveness, care, respect and so much more.
Love
A small word but it's like oxygen for a marriage to breathe. Couple should love and care for each other. Even if you are far away from your spouse or caught up with busy life, both of you should be able to feel that love. Sending small love messages or cards, saying 'I love you' and small kisses are some of the ways one can show their love.
Communication
This is a very important element in marriage. Couples should be able to communicate freely. They should be comfortable enough to confide in each other. Good communication will lead to closeness. There might be things that our spouse does which upset us. But we should be able to get it across without hurting or insulting them.
Look beyond your differences
Each of us come from different walks of life. We have our own interests, likes, dislikes etc. Couples should be able to accept and respect their differences. It's not necessary that spouses can be happy only when they have similar interests. If your interests are different take time to understand what your spouse likes and allocate time for that. Try to take part in each others activities.
Being there for each other
Couples should know that they have each other even in the most difficult of times. Even though one might not be able to give solutions or solve issues just the mere act of being there for each other will bring comfort and joy. Words of encouragement and love will boost confidence and lift spirits.
Family
The spouse's family plays another major role. Learning to accept and love your in-laws as your own solves so many issues that are being causes between couples. Make sure each spends equal time with the family.
Do not take each other for granted. Give respect and abundant love. Pray for togetherness and peace in your lives. Go for small picnics and plan getaways. Support each other and be a friend when needed. Build trust and faith in your relationship. Do not have competition among your selves. Draw a line between your work life and personal life. Let your spouse be a person to share your burden. Remember your spouse is not a stress ball but a person who will help ease it.
Building a happy marriage is not complicated as some say. It just needs some time and dedication.
