What to pack in a diaper bag

by Hilary Peer

Created on: July 27, 2009

The diaper bag is basically a survival kit for you and your baby. Of course it must be easy and comfortable to carry; most strollers come with matching ones that can be easily attached to the stroller. Try and use the diaper bag for all of your personals too, no need to carry another bag with you. I find checking the bag the night before helps me to keep organized and stops me from running around last minute checking that the bag is ready. Another important thing to remember is the bag will also be used by your partner; it may be a good idea to have a neutral color good for both mums and dads.

On to what to take with you, honestly there is no need to pack up your whole house every time you go out of the door, but there are basic essentials that you will most definitely need. These can be divided into categories. If you have to carry supplies for more than one child, add a few extras, older children may need a change of clothes. You can also take along with you a few crayons and a small coloring pad.

Changing baby: At least five nappies, baby wipes, plastic bag, (for those dirty diapers) and a changing cloth. You can buy disposable changing mats or use a muslin cloth. A change of clothes should also be packed in your bag.

Food and liquid: Only you know how often your baby eats but I recommend even if you are breast feeding to bring with you bottles and at least three portions of formula. There are handy containers with dividers that you can buy in any pharmacy or baby shop. If your baby is eating solids, bring a meal with you and some snacks such as fruit, cereal or cookies. Don't forget a spoon and a bib too. Bring some water as well, especially on those hot days.

Toys: It's always a good idea to take a couple of toys with you, especially for those long journeys. A rattle or a book is a good idea.

Medicine: Carry with you a pain reliever and some teething gel for those sore gums. These can be stored in a sealable bag.

I have finished with the essentials, now a few extra tips. Don't forget about yourself; take some thing to drink and some extra snacks too. Bring your wallet and always have your cellular phone with you. Last but not least enjoy your time out with you baby and children.
