3 Unique Crochet Patterns for Hangers

Crocheted clothes hangers are fun and easy to make. You can use whatever stitches you like and either crochet directly over the hanger, or make a wide trim or 2 triangles that you slip stitch together. Most patterns for hangers don't cover the arch that hangs on the closet rod. However, with a little practice and patience, it's not that difficult to have a finished coat hanger project that is crocheted from end to end.

Crocheting Directly Over the Hanger

Crocheting directly over the hanger is easy and quick to do. You will need floral tape for the hanging arch, a medium size hook (D to H works well), your choice of yarn (doily to heavy depending on your preference), hot glue gun, and a clothes hanger. It is strongly recommended to use yarn that isn't fuzzy and won't shed.

Crocheting over the hanging arch of your hanger is optional. Begin by taping over the arch all the way down to the main part of the hanger. Do not tape the entire hanger, as this is unnecessary. If you are uncertain about crocheting over floral tape, omit this step and crochet around the base of your hanger only.

Step 1: Holding your hanger with the hook facing to your right, and your yarn behind it, make a loop on your hook. Insert your hook into the center of the hanger and pull a loop through it to secure the yarn to the hanger.

Step 2: Insert the hook into the center of the hanger, with the yarn supply remaining at the back and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on your hook. This is your first single crochet. Continue single crocheting around the main section of the hanger and repeat until you get back to the top. Chain 1, turn and proceed with a pretty crochet stitch of your choice for added ascetics. When the body of your hanger is complete, finish off or follow instructions in step 3 to cover the hook.

Step 3: The yarn does not glide easily when you are working over the tape. Be patient and give yourself enough length for your stitch so that they don't snag on the tape. At the beginning of the hook covered in tape, yarn over your hook, go back behind the hanger, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on the hook, yarn over draw through 2 loops on the hook again. Repeat to the tip of the hanger. Finish off.

Step 4: To finish your hanger, crochet 2 mini flowers that you will attach with a hot glue gun. Chain 2, insert hook in first chain and draw up a loop, single crochet 5
