Comic books have, for the longest time, been regarded as nothing more than "kid stuff", but with series containing more adult oriented content, such as, Transmetropolitan, Watchmen, and Sandman, becoming increasingly present on comic shop shelves, the old ideas about comic books being just for kids has been disproved. Still, there is a strong desire and, in fact, a strong need for comic books that are still geared towards children, comics with stories that are more fun and funny than doom and gloom.
Listed below are some of the best comic books for children. The target audience for these comics range in age from beginning readers to young teenagers, but the truth is that adults will have just as much fun reading these titles as children will.
1. Owly.
Andy Runton's creation Owly is a cute and gentle owl who lives in the forest with his good friends Wormy (a worm, as you might imagine) and Scampy the chipmunk. Owly's stories are light-hearted and extremely kid friendly, often involving the title character encountering small dilemmas such as how best to do something nice for his friends or having to say goodbye to some friendly hummingbirds when they must fly south for the winter. The best thing about Owly, and the reason why it's such a great comic book for young children, is that the whole thing is done without dialog. There are expressive thought balloons and symbols but there are no actual words contained within the book, which allows for the reader to use more of their imagination as a means of progressing the story in their minds. The artwork is simple yet satisfying, and Runton makes great use of his character's facial expressions in place of dialog. Overall, Owly is a great, Eisner Award winning, comic that contains no objectionable content and is suitable for even the youngest of comic book fans.
2. Sonic the Hedgehog.
If your children are into "cute", but crave a little more action in their comics, then Sonic the Hedgehog is the book for them. This comic based on the popular video game character has been continuously published for nearly seventeen years and, like its titular character, it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Sonic the Hedgehog follows the adventures of Sonic, a super fast hedgehog, Knuckles, a similarly speedy echidna (think spiny anteater), and Tails, a two-tailed fox. Sonic's team, sometimes accompanied by other anthropomorphic animal characters, battles the evil Dr. Robotnik as he attempts to control the mystical
