After World War I, floods of soldiers returned home after a brutal, life-altering experience only to find that there were very little resources to help reintroduce them back into American society. After living in trenches surrounded by death, many were lost. The Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, known as the GI Bill of Rights, helped veterans get education, homes, medical care and other services that the protectors of our country deserve.
The GI Bill encompasses many different types of benefits, under many different categories. It can often be confusing finding the specific information that you need when there is such a plethora of information available. The best place to find out accurate and reliable information on the GI Bill and the benefits provided under it, is perhaps the GI Bill website under the United States Department of Veteran's Affairs.
History
To learn about the introduction of the GI Bill, visit the history section of the GI Bill website. Here you can learn about the steps that lead to the introduction of the GI Bill and read President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Statement on Signing the G.I. Bill.
Benefits
On the GI Bill website there is comprehensive information on the different benefits that are available. Information on education, home loans, compensation and pension, survivor's benefits, vocational rehabilitation and life insurance can all be found here. Information on health care is also available.
Questions?
Information about the GI Bill and available benefits can be confusing, so if you still have questions check out the FAQs, brochures, and Q and A sections of the website. You can also contact the VA for more information on the GI Bill.
Other Sources
There are many places to find out more about the GI Bill. Websites such as Cornell Law School's compendium of United States Code Title 38 Regulations provide information on the government documents regarding the GI Bill. Military websites such as those of the Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Army and Coast Guard may also be of interest. Of course, experience is always valuable so ask a Veteran for first-hand knowledge.
The GI Bill has provided invaluable services for the brave men and women who risk their lives for their country.
