When someone says 'stained glass', most folks think of the scenes depicted in church windows, or of the great lamps and objects d'art of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Stained glass never quite goes out of style, and many companies offer their interpretation of Tiffany lamps. Now the beauty of stained glass can be enjoyed without as much work, tools, or technical skill.
Stained glass art is created by individually cutting many pieces of different colored glass, laying them out on a pattern, and joining them with soft lead channels, then framing them to hold everything in place. With art glass, a solid panel of glass has an artificial lead applied to the surface, and the glass is stained to complete a stunning picture. Both stained glass and art glass use the same designs and colors.
Art glass is also a rewarding hobby that does not require the skills and tools of stained glass, but the results can be as beautiful. Applying stain to glass in this style allows you to apply more exact color and individual style, more precisely, and is more versatile than stained glass. You can create pictures with a large amount of detail, or stylized designs and traditional patterns.
There is no limit to the subject matter; a teddy bear is just as appropriate as a grizzly bear, in the right setting. Traditional patterns include roses and other flowers, birds and butterflies, peacocks, and celtic knots. More modern designs may depict cats, horses, landscapes, and whimsical subjects, but your creative ideas are unlimited.
If you'd rather buy stained glass or art glass, there is a ready market. Tiffany style lamps and light fixtures are available in a wide range of qualities and prices, from simple patchwork to intricate designs. Lowe's and Home Depot have a selection of stained glass and faux stained glass lamps and shades, for a basic selection. Art glass panels and exclusive items are most prominently available from Joan Baker Designs and sold at a number of stores around the country as well as online. Her selection and use of color, as well as her design talent, is a large part of the appeal of these stunning creations, which is the essence of stained glass and art glass. Designs are also available that appeal to children, special occasions, and a rugged outdoor style.
While stained glass applications are somewhat limited when working with small, detailed items, the choice of items that are subject to art glass treatment include panels illuminated with candles, nightlights, vases, business card holders, picture frames, trays, trinket boxes, tabletops, and fireplace screens. There is an art glass design for every decor, and every budget. Whatever your taste or style, for your home or for a loved one, these awesome and collectible pieces of art will brighten your room and enrich your decor.
