The most all - affecting camping mistake is not properly researching the destination. Tiny tents on maps offer little more than a general location where camping is permitted. The campsite itself may prove to be on the top of a sun - baked mesa or at the bottom of a slot canyon subject to freezing temperatures in July. Appropriate preparation is the key to any successful and pleasant camping experience and preparation is impossible if nothing is known of the destination. Never rely solely on "word of mouth" recommendations.
Camping gear varies according to what type of camping is to be done. Not all camping gear is appropriate for any location. Sleeping bags should be rated for the temperature range in which one expects to sleep. Tents or RVs are not allowed in some areas. Backpacking requires trash to be packed out. What you take on a trip is dependent upon location, conditions expected and personal readiness to accept restrictions. It is a mistake to assume all gear works for every camping trip. Take only what is useful, appropriate for conditions and necessary for activities.
The exception to this rule is an emergency kit. Never assume you are immune to accident or injury and always include one. If you do not need it yourself, someone else you meet along the way might be glad for it. First aid can be a comfort or a lifeline. Research common accidents for the area to which you are going and include items in your kit which would be most useful. Never mistake the possibilities in the unknown.
Water is something we generally take for granted and too many people do not realize the dangers of dehydration. Weather does not need to be blistering hot for the body to become dehydrated. The sweat of exercise, unaccustomed altitude and variations in a normal days routine can all contribute to changes in a bodys need for water. Take water along and drink regularly whether hiking, camping in a campsite or doing other outdoor activities.
Fire is not just for cooking. Warmth, safety from wildlife and signal are a few of its other uses. Matches carried in a waterproof container protect them not only from a dip in the stream, but body sweat and dew which can also render them next to useless. Back - ups of tinder and flint may seem like overkill but they take up little room and are a good addition to your emergency kit. Prepare for the unexpected.
Always tell someone where you are going. Leave maps and marked trails if you plan to be in the wild. Even experienced campers can become disoriented and lost and radical weather changes can occur at any time. Go with someone; never alone, and leave an itinerary behind for someone to follow if you do not return on schedule.
The biggest mistake all campers make is to underestimate the power of nature. Seek shelter in threatening conditions even if you feel you are safe for the moment. Conditions can change remarkably fast and the time to act is before things get dangerous. By the time danger is recognized, it may be too late to make changes. Be aware when camping, no matter where you are.
