Manga reviews: Antique Bakery

Created on: July 25, 2009

For those that love drama, comedy, and bakeries, "Antique Bakery" is definitely one manga title to check out. The manga was released back in 1999 and stopped running around 2002. This runs for about four volumes. So far, this is perhaps one of the best manga titles I had ever come across. This is a story about one of the most interesting predicaments and situations from what I have read. If you love comedy and a story with much substance, Antique Bakery is definitely one to check out.

The manga is authored and illustrated by Yoshinaga Fumi. It gives a very interesting perspective to bakeries. Antique Bakery was popular enough to be adapted into an anime series. On another note, this is one manga that is LGBT friendly. If you are part of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community, Antique Bakery is definitely something to read and check out.

Storyline: A

Antique Bakery has quite the most compelling story. There is a main storyline which is driven by a central plot. However, the storyline is character driven as well. In a sense, the plot and the characters depend on each other.

So far, it revolves around a man who opens up a place called Antique Bakery. This is a very classy bakery that caters to just about every type of crowd as long as they are willing to pay along with appreciating fine pastries. The pastries are at a reasonable price as well. Ironically, the owner does not have a taste of sweets. However, Antique Bakery sells the best pastries in the city.

It is revealed that the guy opened the place in order to find the person that kidnapped him as a child. The only thing he had to remember by was that the person that abducted him had a thing for cake. The person would buy cakes everyday and feed it to him. He is riddled with nightmares of this ordeal.

There is also the interesting character dynamic of the story as well. The characters do a good job of driving the story forward.

Characters: S+

Antique Bakery has the interesting cast of characters. There are four main characters that come from different walks of life.

Keisuke Tachibana is the owner of Antique Bakery. He opened up the bakery as a means of trying to find the person that kidnapped him. So far, the place ends up becoming a very successful business. Despite the trauma, he is one of the most comical characters in the manga as he clashes with Eiji Kanda.

Yusuke Ono is the patissier of Antique Bakery. It is revealed
