Party game reviews: Salad Bowl

Salad Bowl is the perfect party game for friends and family. It offers a hilarious and entertaining spark to any get-together. All you need are a few objects around your house, a group of willing people, and you're ready to start. Begin by finding any bowl (preferably a salad bowl), a sheet of paper ripped into small pieces, a pencil for each player, and a timer. Hand out three pieces of paper to each player. When everyone has a piece of paper, they will write the name of any person on each sheet of paper. For example, you may write George Bush on the first piece of paper, Barney the Purple Dinosaur on the second, and Uncle Mike on the third. Next, fold each piece of paper in half and place it in the bowl. The game consists of three unique rounds which grow increasingly difficult and entertaining.

Once everyone put their pieces of paper in the bowl, you are ready to begin the first round. Make sure that everyone is sitting in a circle and divide into two teams. Every other player will be on a team with each other (just make sure that you aren't sitting next to someone on your team). Begin the game by choosing a player to start and setting the timer for one minute. The starting player begins with the salad bowl on their lap. When everyone is ready, start the timer. The starting player will take one of the pieces of paper out of the bowl and try to get their team to guess what is on the piece of paper. You can use any words to describe the person, you just can't say anything in the person's name. For example, if it is Barney the Purple Dinosaur, you may explain to your teammates, "He is in a children's television show. He is big and prehistoric." Your team will be shouting out answers. Once someone on your team guesses the correct answer, you may pick up a new piece of paper from the bowl. Continue this method until the time runs out. However many you have completed, add that many points to your team's score. When you are done with the points, pass the salad bowl to your left. That person will do the exact same thing that you just did. Continue going around the circle until the salad bowl is empty.

When you are finished with the first round, gather up all of the pieces of paper and place them back in the bowl. Shuffle them up and give the bowl to the person to the left of the player that finished in the last round. Since it is the second round, it plays different than the first. You start it the same way that you did in the previous round. Set the timer and take a piece of paper out of the bowl. This time, however, you are only allowed three words to describe the character. For example, if it is George Bush, you could say, "Former president Junior." The rest of your teammates guess exactly like the previous round, and the round ends the same as its successor also.

The third and final round starts the same as the second one did. Place the pieces of paper back in the bowl and start the timer. This time, though, you can only act out the character without saying anything, like charades. Your teammates will guess, and it goes around in a circle like the last two rounds. Once the bowl is empty, you will be able to count up all the points. Whoever has the most points wins.

Since you will be using the same characters in all three rounds, you will begin to become familiar with the characters. However, each round gets harder with different rules. There will be hilarious moments, and since the game is so cheap to play, it is easy on your wallet and great for a crowd.
