American wealth is held by such a small percentage of the American population that it is creating an everwidening problem on several fronts. Not only is the gap between the haves and the have nots growing, but the political clout of the wealthy is growing daily, and always in favor of the wealthy. Lobbyists and campaign contributors have become our biggest lawmakers, and the American people are spurring them on by continually handing their money over to them.
The good news is we still have the opportunity to take control of this situation and give ourselves the chance to catch up. By changing just a few of our habits we can greatly help to decrease the gap. Why buy a hamburger at McDonald's for instance when you can choose to support a locally owned restaurant? Certainly convenience plays a role in our decision to utilize the services of corporations, but we could all stand for a longer wait in line, if it means improving the country and the quality of life of it's citizens.
