Habits employed by effective writers

by Katarzyna Radzka

Created on: July 24, 2009

Many non writers assume that writing is the easiest job in the world and all it takes is putting a few words on paper, without actually realising how much sweat, tears and heartache can go into writing a finished product that's ready for publication. Writing is hard work and the professional writers have employed effective habits in order to succeed in the industry.

Write every day

Calling oneself a writer is not enough. To be a writer you must actually get down and do a lot of writing. Effective writers sit down at their desk or at the kitchen table and write every day. It doesn't matter if the sun is shining or it's thundering outside. The dishes can wait, and so can the phone calls and emails that only put a strain on their productivity. Writers write first and once that is out of the way, they make time for other non writing activities.

Read as much as possible

A writer won't be much good if they don't read. Reading is a vital part of being a writer and the majority of effective writers have this habit down pat. The more you read the better versed you will be and the more you will have to say. Reading is also a fantastic activity that helps generate new ideas for future stories and keeps you abreast as to what is going on in the writing world. A writer has to read just like a musician has to listen. Read whatever you can get your hands on; newspapers, books, magazines, advertisements, leaflets. The writer never knows when their great idea is going to appear from.

Submit regularly

Effective writers are also in the habit of regularly submitting their work to publishers and editors. Unless you want to be an in-the-closet sort of writer and never dream of being published than keep your writing to yourself, but if you want to be an effective writer, than it's best you start submitting your work out into the world of publishing. Get into the habit of contacting editors with your article ideas and make sure you send that manuscript to prospective editors. That's how effective writers get published and it's the only way you will get published and become one of them.

Network with others

Networking in writing is just as important as in any other business. People are your business. Sure writing is a solitary activity but the end result is that people will read your words. By networking you can build up a support group to keep you going when times get tough, and you can build a readership for your writing. The more readers you have the better sales and confidence you will have. Effective writers are also effective networkers. Make sure you are too.

If you want to be an effective writer you have to get behind that desk and start writing. Read whenever and whatever you can. Share your writing with the right people and get to know as many as you can. The day will come when you too will be an effective writer.
