Microwave oven reviews: Whirlpool GH5184XPQ

by Kaitlyn Hamilton

Whirlpool's over the range microwave model number GH5184XPQ is a fantastic product! This is a solid white microwave that is designed to be mounted above the cooktop or range to save counter space. If you love great quality with lots of features, then you will love this microwave.

The 1100 watts of cooking power is much better than what you will find in the average microwaves that typically range from 800 to 1000 watts and the 1.8 cu. ft. interior is large enough for almost all of your microwaving needs. The Accuwave Power System is smart enough to be able to soften butter or ice cream without melting it. It also defrosts evenly so that the center isn't still frozen while the edges begin to cook like you will find with inferior microwaves.

It also has an Accusimmer Cycle that will allow you to gently warm soups, sauces, and rice at a simmer without having spatters all over your microwave. It really is a very modern machine with some great features!

The Kids Menu feature is used to cook convenient items such as chicken nuggets, pizza, Hot Pockets, and Bagel Bites. It uses a 6th sense technology that monitors the food as it is cooking so that it will cook thoroughly without burning or making the food taste stale and rubbery.

It has a nice, big window on the front and a light inside so you can watch your food as it cooks. You will also like the metal cooking rack that will allow you to heat multiple dishes at once. You have the option to turn the 12 3/4" turntable off or on and the cooking rack is also great for reheating casseroles and lasagna dishes. You can remove it easily just by lifting up on the rack if you want to cook with a larger container such as a glass mixing bowl or a tall bag of popcorn.

The four speed quiet partner hood fan underneath can be vented or you can have the air filtered back into the room. Just be sure to change the charcoal filter inside at least once per year if you do not vent this machine. I would still change it about every 18 months even if you do vent it. Also, be sure to remove the aluminum mesh filters from the bottom side of the microwave and put them in your dishwasher once a month. If you don't use a dishwasher, then you can easily wash them by hand with a little water and liquid soap. Allow to air dry before remounting on your microwave.

There are so many features and great things about this microwave that it is impossible to list them all in a brief review, but I do find this machine to be an excellent value and I very highly recommend it. It is currently available in black, white, and bisque for around $400 to $450 and in stainless steel for around $450 - $500. If you can't find this microwave at your local appliance retailer, then you might check online at some of the internet retailers such as AJMadison.com.
