The basics of creating a website

by Hernani Cerqueira

Created on: July 24, 2009

When the web was born, to create a website would be a really expensive and time consuming activity, but there was still a lot to invent, almost all the websites were boring and static pages with a poor design, and anyone with an innovative idea, which he could put online, would automatically become a successful webmaster... Nowadays things are different, webmasters already came up with practically everything we can imagine. Blogs, Social bookmarking platforms, Forums, Micro Blogs, Picture albums, Video sharing... you name it. Take five minutes to imagine a new concept. Now open your elected search engine and check the originality of your idea. Chances are that someone already came up with something like that. But in compensation, it is really cheap or even free to start a new website...

So, the very first basic of starting a new website is the idea. You might want to promote or sell a product on an online store, share your thoughts on a blog, create a community around a particular subject, start a new concept etc, etc... It's time to gather your tools. Depending on your purpose, a free web hosting provider may be enough, or maybe you need to spend a few bucks for extra hosting power. That choice will also depend on your developing platform. You might want to create everything from scratch in some programming language you're already knowledgeable, or you might want to use an open source platform that suits your purpose. Once again, you can easily find free platforms for almost anything, and almost all hosting providers offer some sort of one click installer for those. And as anything in life, there are paid options to. Google for some reviews and tutorials, and you'll find some great info to help you out in your quest.

During the developing stage, you have to consider a couple of things. First of all, never leave bugs and errors to later. The thing that most annoys web surfers are error messages, and under development functionality. Make sure that everything is functioning correctly before deploying your creation. You might need some help, search on web developer forums, there are always people waiting to give you some hints. Then carefully work on the design. Make it unique and enjoyable. Good graphics and colors have the power to make people stand and make an excellent first impression. And the most important part, the content. Quality and relevant content is what attracts visitors. Don't make people think that they are wasting their time on your website.
