Joseph Pilates created the fitness regimen Pilates in Germany in the early 20th century only it wasn't called Pilates it was called Contrology. Joseph Pilates dubbed the name contrology because he believed the exercises helped the mind control the muscles. Joseph Pilates believed that mental and physical health were an essential part of each other. He argued that his exercise regime created a fusion of mind and body through its core principles breathing, centering, concentration, precision, flow, and flexibility. When Joseph Pilates first created the system of exercises it was proposed for the rehabilitation of soldiers during World War I. In recent times, Pilates has become more popular through advocacy by Hollywood starlets and late night infomercials promising amazing results through the use of all-in-one Pilates contraptions. But, what exactly is Pilates and what are the six core principles of Pilates?

Pilates is a system of aerobic and yoga positions that focus on the core muscles. The core principals of Pilates are breathing, centering, concentration, precision, flow, and flexibility.

The first principle is breathing. Proper breathing is a key component of every Pilates movement. Joseph Pilates believed that blood helped awaken the body and through proper breathing one can achieve enhanced circulation.

The second principle is centering. Centering involves the use of what is called the powerhouse in Pilates. The powerhouse is comprised of the abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks. Using the powerhouse helps increase abdominal strength and spine support.

The third principle is concentration. Pilates movements require that one breathe and position their body properly to receive its full benefits. Coordinating so many actions at once requires intense concentration. By learning how to use intense focus, Pilates practitioners can increase their mental and physical connection.

The fourth principle is precision. Just as one must exercise great concentration in Pilates movements, one must also exercise precision. The more accurately you perform each movement, the greater the benefit you can receive.

The fifth principle is flow. Joseph Pilates created each movement to flow naturally together. When done properly, you will flow from one movement to the next increasing the your body's mental and physical connection, promoting healthy circulation, and increasing flexibility, the sixth principle of Pilates.

That's right, regularly practicing Pilates will increase your flexibility. Additionally, the more flexible you are, the more accurately you are able to perform each movement and the greater the benefit you'll receive.

While Pilates is not a sufficient form of cardiovascular exercise, it is a remarkable exercise system that can provide phenomenal results. Pilates practitioners often sport bodies with long, lean muscles and strong abs. Many who practice Pilates also practice yoga, an exercise regime that also focuses on breathing, flexibility and concentration. By utilizing the six principles of Pilates, you can achieve maximum results and enhance your mental and physical connection.
