Etiquette for Pilates classes

The etiquette for a Pilates class is the same as any other exercise class you may take. For the most part, it is not hard to decipher, as it's general common sense. However, there usually seems to be someone in every class that could benefit from a reminder of what is acceptable and what isn't while exercising. Here are a few suggestions that your instructor and your fellow classmates would like you to keep in mind the next time you sign up for a Pilates class.

Arrive On Time

It is respectful to your instructor and your classmates to arrive on time. If you walk in late, you will be interrupting the flow of the class. Arriving late is a disadvantage to you because you will not receive the full benefits of the sequence of movements that the instructor is teaching. In addition, when you arrive on time (if not a few minutes early) you will be sure to get your preferred workout spot on the floor.

Turn Cell Phones Off

Again, this is about respect to those around you. If phones are ringing in the middle of the class, it can interfere with people receiving proper instruction. It is also very distracting and makes it difficult to maintain concentration. If you must have your phone on while you are in class, at the very least turn it on silent mode/vibrate so it won't distract others.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

There is no need to go out and spend a lot of money buying special clothes for a Pilates class. The key factors to keep in mind are that your clothing should not be too tight or too baggy. You want to be able to move freely and your instructor needs to be able to see the line of your body as you are performing your exercise movements. Shoes are not worn in Pilates classes, however some students prefer to wear special footwear, such as Pilates socks that provide a barrier and assist your grip on the equipment.

Fragrance

Many people are sensitive to the scents of various fragrances and products. To make matters worse, when added with perspiration the scent drastically changes for the worse. If you must wear a fragrance make sure that it is a very light scent.

Let Your Instructor Know About Any Injuries, Illnesses or Changes in Your Body

Many students begin learning Pilates as a form of rehabilitation from injury or surgery. Others may have a chronic illness. Still others just want to improve their overall fitness. Regardless, it is important for you to inform your instructor of any health concerns prior to beginning. It is also important to state any new pains or strains you may be feeling. In some cases, it may be necessary to modify your exercise routine temporarily as your body heals.

Pilates classes are usually a very welcoming environment, and are filled with people of all ages and all fitness levels. By following a few simple etiquette guidelines you will be on your way to a very enjoyable experience and benefit from all that Pilates has to offer.
