Why the Cleveland Browns need to show improvement

by Bruce Bostwick

Created on: July 24, 2009

The Cleveland Browns must show some sign of improvement because quite honestly, it is ridiculous that this team has been around for the past ten seasons only putting together two winning seasons. Ownership has been with the Lerner family and has yet to pay off in terms of finding the right players and of course drafting as well. Granted, they are in a much tougher division so that it becomes even harder to win in the first place.

Only one playoff appearance and it was in defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Speaking of the Steelers, is it even a rivalry anymore because it is so one-sided it isn't even funny. Cleveland does not have the defense to challenge Pittsburgh nor the offense to give it a serious run for its money in the first place. How in the world can this team actually have a chance of beating them? Year after year, it becomes the same story.

Come to think of it, it is almost identical to at one point when Michigan was beating Ohio State consistently prior to the arrival of Jim Tressel. Of course, since he came in, Michigan has had some problems with Ohio State but that is another story for another time.

Going back to the Browns, the city of Cleveland wants a winner bad and with the passion for the Browns that the city has, it would be nice to finally have it rewarded after all the years of backing the team and having their kids and grandkids loving this team. This is the way it is in that regard. Even though there are other major Cleveland teams, the city will be a Browns town and it will stay that way forever. It is hard to explain.

It is sad to this team compete with the Bengals in an effort to avoid being dead last in the division. It is a sad state and really being the laughing stock is something that gets tiresome after a while. At this point, there has to be improvement and maybe with Eric Mangini they could improve but only time will tell.

If there isn't any other reason for the Browns, it would have to do with the simple fact that if they don't, the unthinkable could happen to the Browns. Can you imagine a day where the seats do not fill up and it becomes a wasteland? That would be unlikely but try to picture it as that could possibly happen. Their needs to be some signs and perhaps this draft could really be the start of something good and would be nice for a change.

It matters not who is the starter as long it translates into winning. If Brady Quinn proves to be the guy, he is a hero to Cleveland and he would be one for sure if he were the one that did the unthinkable, lead the team to the Super Bowl. May the best things happen to them and finally see some improvement becoming the team that people can believe in without question.
