The only things we have to do are live, die, pay taxes... and stress out. No matter what your situation it is inevitable that you will face stress. Being unable to deal with your stress in a healthy manner can lead not only to emotional and social problems but to physical issues as well. Stress can lead to depression, anxiety, strain on relationships, headaches, stomach problems and some holistic healers even claim it can cause cancer. The key lies not in avoiding stressful situations, but rather in learning how to effectively deal with them. You don't need to become a Zen master to learn to overcome stress; there are a few very simple tricks to relieving the strain.

1. Go for a walk - It's a well documented fact that just 20 minutes of walking allows your body to release endorphins which can help alleviate stress.

2. Take 10 deep breaths - Breathe out all your air until you can't blow anymore then breathe deeply into your diaphragm, take ten long slow deep breaths.

3. Daily gratitude list - It's difficult to remain stressful while writing down at least 10 things every day that you're grateful for.

4. 15 minutes of you time - Find fifteen minutes in your day that is just for you, whether it be a drive, a walk, a talk with a friend, a TV show, a book or just sitting quietly on your own, set aside time every day just for you. You can't take care of anyone else if you don't take care of yourself.

5. Reevaluate, refocus and re-budget - Take stock of your daily routine and trim off the excess, figure out your primary focus then re-budget your time accordingly.

These five steps may seem excessively simple, but they are remarkably effective. In the daily hustle and bustle of our lives we tend to shrug off the little things that seem like fluff we can do without, such as taking a quick walk, remembering to be grateful for the little things, taking a minute out for yourself, and staying focused on the things that are important to you. Being able to manage your stress levels is an invaluable tool to leading a happy life. The truth is nobody wants to be stressed out, we all want feel peaceful, relaxed and happy, yet stress is as natural a part of life as is breathing and bowel movements. It serves its purpose, it keeps us motivated, on our toes and away from becoming too stagnant, but we the trick is learning to make sure it is the exception in our lives and not the norm.
