Were I to choose between vacationing at the beach or in the mountains, I would probably choose the mountains.
Don't get me wrong, I like sunning myself at the beach, comfortably ensconced in a lounger reading a book and drinking something refreshing. Where I come from, Argentina, the mandatory beach drink is cleric, a cousin of the Spanish sangria, and if it's accompanied by golden crispy calamari, you can ask for nothing better.
On the other hand, there are a lot of things to be said about mountain holidays. Crisp, fresh air? Check. Breathtaking views? Check. Feeling in communion with nature? Check. Bracing walks? Check. Relating to fellow trekkers? Check. Of course, there are a few precautions you need to take, such as bringing enough water to prevent dehydration, wearing sunscreen and a hat to avoid sunburn, or wearing appropriate footwear and light clothing. And always bring a camera with you. I can't emphasize this enough because I love taking photographs and then having photo books printed.
The reasons mentioned above are the usual ones people give when talking about the mountains as a holiday destination. I have my personal reasons for avoiding the beach, at least during peak summer season.
First and foremost, my body stubbornly seems to refuse to get beach ready, as if it had a mind of its own. Therefore, when I'm fully clothed -in readiness for a long trek, as opposed to wearing a bikini- I don't need to worry about cellulite, stretch marks, a Jello-like behind, bingo flaps and muffin top. Not that I'm narcissistic in any way whatsoever.
Now let me bring up the subject of food. You can have a picnic in both locations: fill the cooler with ice and drinks, pack cold chicken and potato salad, something sweet for afters and voila! picnic is served. This is all very well until the breeze picks up at the beach and deposits sand on you food. Sandy chicken is a big no no; whereas if you choose a spot by, say, a lake, you'll be safe. Another great thing about spending you holidays in the mountains is that you can indulge in your favourite sweet treats like there's no tomorrow because, what the heck, you're going to burn all those calories on your next trek.
Finally, if you're somewhat apprehensive, let me suggest the mountains as your next holiday destination. There's absolutely no risk of your husband of boyfriend checking out other women or you wife or girlfriend swooning over the lifeguard on duty. You're as safe as houses.
