Since the dawn of time, man has been puzzled about things that seem unreal. The Stone Age men, who started the first fire were amazed by its brightness and burning quality and considered themselves magicians for a while, even though they initially didn't know that it was the rubbing of stones together that caused the fire.
When they came to understand that the fire was caused when two stones were rubbed together they no longer considered it a magical feat (though no scientist was around to explain it to them), but it opened their minds to the fact that they were things that they don't know. And this was the start of the search for and the desire to know and become familiar with what is not known: the spiritual.
However, one thing that seems strange is the fact that our modern world is still fascinated by magic and anything to do with it, even though we have a lot of scientists around who can sometimes explain things that seem extraordinary and unreal. But, the problem is that it is not everything that scientists can explain, which is one of the reason why we are still captivated by magic. Detailed below are the other reasons.
Curiosity
This is perhaps the major cause of the fascination that magic has for most people. Both children and old alike are always bent on knowing that which can't be perceived by the eyes or felt. And this desire to know what is not known is not really bad.
An intensive study of man's mind will easily reveal that we are imaginative creatures. We all possess a brain that sometimes can form pictures on its own, of both the physical and the non-physical. And it is this imaginative quality of our brain that makes us to be so fascinated with things that cannot be seen with the eyes or felt by the hands.
Desire for Power
The desire for power and popularity is a nature man possessed since the olden days. For most of the ancient, nothing brings greater satisfaction than to be known as being powerful and influential. And it was this desire that caused a lot of the early Celts (who lived between 700 BC and 100 AD), to become the first people to dabble in magic and a variety of occult practices.
Today, this desire is still alive and most people will give whatever they can to attain magical prowess and be known for their craft.
Mastering of Nature
Some people are also fascinated by the dark arts of magic because of the believe that anyone who perfects him/herself in the craft can control nature to a certain extent. For instance, there are a lot of websites that advertise about witchcraft claiming to foresee the future of a person and if it looks bad, manipulate it to become good. And a lot of people are easily attracted to these adverts, for the simple desire of becoming masters of their own destiny.
Others also love the idea of being able to control others. For instance, there is the believe that, a guy whose proposal has been refused by a female friend can through some magical means make her to change her mind and agree to his proposal. And this is what draws most people to magic; the ability to control others and the natural order of things.
Boredom
This may be the least reason why people are fascinated by magic, but nonetheless, it's also important. A few years back, the whole world was fascinated by the travel of man into space, but like other earthly things, it also lost it's novelty. And today, nobody will care a hoot if Russia or America starts building a military base on Planet Jupiter.
Magic, on the other hand, have that quality of eternal novelty. Just like the Harry Potter series, it's a world of endless mysteries and one which can make or unmake the life of anyone who ventures into it.
