A guide to buying seafood in a supermarket

Depending on the location in which an individual lives, fresh fish markets and seafood shops may not be available. However, supermarkets can be a great resource when choosing seafood if the buyer knows what to look for.

When looking to purchase seafood, the fresher the better. The seafood that is kept in sealed containers should be purchased with caution. The seal that protects the seafood has air inside that preserves the product and prolongs its shelf life. However, the minute the seal is broken, the fish begins to spoil at a rapid pace. A sales associate should be able to answer any questions regarding when the seafood was caught as well as when it was delivered to the store.

Close examination of the product can ensure a wiser decision is made. The food will not be without a slight odor; however, there should not be a strong "fish" smell present. If the fish is fresh, then the smell will be acceptable and not overwhelming.

The color of seafood will tell a lot about the product as well. It should be moist, bright, and presentable. If it is fish you are looking for, the color should be vibrant and not dull. The scales should be in tact and slightly lifted. If the scales are missing, the fish is not fresh and should be avoided. Before choosing a fish, the skin should be gently pressed with your hand. If it springs back after being touched than it is the fresher choice.

The eyes of fresh fish will be bright and clear. If they appear to be cloudy or sunken, then this is a sign that the fish is not fresh and probably should not be purchased.

Oysters and clams are other common seafood choices. The shells should be completely closed or have the ability to close when gently touched. All seafood should have been kept at a proper temperature to ensure it is safe for consumption.

The freezer section is another popular option when purchasing seafood. Flash frozen refers to fish that caught and frozen in a quick manner. Since it is frozen quickly, fish is able to retain its vital nutrients and flavor. For buyers that are not comfortable with their ability in choosing fresh fish, this is a wise alternative. It is a common misconception that fresh seafood is always better than frozen. The truth is a lot of seafood are frozen right after they are caught and still on the boat.

When choosing frozen seafood, vacuum-sealed fish are typically the best option. The seafood should be frozen completely. If ice crystals have formed on the outside of the bag or the product has a freezer burn, this is a sign that it has lost moisture.

Buyers should be educated on seafood safety and quality before making purchases. Knowing and understanding what you're looking for in seafood will ensure the freshest and optimal selection.
