Tips for Cycling in the Rain
Riding your bicycle in the rain does take a little preparation and experience. Here are some tips that I suggest from all my years of commuting to work and just using the bicycle as a utilitarian device.
(1) Fenders help keep the wet and dirt from spraying you with a constant flow. Fenders can be attached to your bike frame very easily.
(2) You can carry a lightweight cycling shell or rain poncho that folds up and is easy to carry. I suggest a lightweight shell with ventilation because you can heat yourself up fast depending on the weather conditions. There are many technical materials on the market today like Gore-Tex, Coolmax and Polartec depending on how extreme the temperature is. They also have tech rain pants . A helmet and sport glasses help keep the rain off your head and face. If you are commuting to work you might want to bring a change of dry clothes.
(3) Avoid puddles and wet leaves, also any painted surfaces, construction vents and grates. All these obstacles can be slippery as ice. If you have to go through any these areas make sure you slow down and shift down to a lower gear. Also give yourself time to stop in the rain.
(4) Turn on all lights on your bike so motorists and others can see you better. Also anticipate other motorists as they have less control over their cars in the rain.
(5) Ride at a moderate pace in flow and direction of traffic in bike lane or trail. If you must use the sidewalk, if allowed, make sure you yield to pedestrians and be alert to other activities.
(6) If it begins raining hard, pull over and seek shelter but be careful of trees in lightning storms, as they act as a magnet.
(7) When parking your bike outside in the rain, turn lock so water does not run into key hole. Put a plastic bag over the seat so it will be dry after you return.
(8) Clean up bike with soap and hose down after your ride, making sure to clean chain, and all bearing areas with a cloth, so as to prevent water from leaking into the bearing areas.
So don't let a little rain dampen your riding spirit, I can remember many fun and invigorating rides in the rain. There is a certain peace and tranquility when riding in the rain that can't be beat.
