Created on: July 23, 2009

Nowadays the rapid growth of technology demands much tougher competition between companies. So they operate using the most advanced software and applications to attain the higher market standard and attract potential customers.

Oracle and SQL server

Oracle declares itself as one of the most common software and is also best known for its sophisticated relational database products.

"Oracle is globally used by thousands of businesses and is still one of the most important software among the different categories including business, students and websites." Cathy Kruggel 21 Aug 2006. (www.teachtarget.com)

"Oracle's relational database was the world's first to support the Structured Query Language (SQL), now an industry standard. When CEO Lawrence J. Ellison and a few associates formed Oracle in 1977, they were out to prove wrong the prevailing theory that relational databases could not be commercially viable. Today, as proof of their success, they've parlayed an initial $2,000 investment in the company into an annual revenue exceeding $9.7 billion. Oracle targets high-end workstations and minicomputers as the server platforms on which to run its database systems."1

Access is another program usually considered for small businesses but is now nearly out of use.

- SQL server (Structured Query Language) and Oracle both used for vast businesses and databases.
- SQL much cheaper than Oracle.
- SQL much easier to use
- SQL provides some other useful tools-data transformation services, reporting services, analytical services, all free.

Advantages of Oracle

1- Very dependable, trustworthy

2- Locking and concurrency are important issues therefore designed so lots of users can read and manipulate the same data while SQL Server and Sybase have been designed as simple benchmark .

3- Different ranges for modification in that there are a lot of reasonable factors.

Disadvantages of Oracle

1- Very complicated, not so easy to learn

2- Needs some essential computer/programming knowledge beforehand

3- Expensive, takes a long time to master (Re: Time is money!)

Linux, UNIX and open office operating system

Linux is a free open-source operating system based on UNIX. Many large companies use UNIX servers for its reliability. All major and most minor databases are now available on Linux.
Here is a brief look at the issues of how Linux manages major tasks, e.g. in banking, like word processing, Spreadsheets and database.
It seems that Word processing is nearly out. Many Microsoft
