Leaving the Nest
A Sparrow fledging
Landed On the window sill
And looked around in
Wonder and awareness.
I whistled from inside.
Searching for the sound,
It saw its own reflection
And gazed at the image.
I tapped on the window.
When it saw me peering
Through the pane, it
Paced and chirped.
With tiny wings fluttering,
It did fancy footwork
And peeped loudly when
Its mother flew to it.
With ruffled feathers, she
Squawked, then flew away.
The fledging flapped its wings
And trailed off behind her.
I wonder what she said
To instill the stamina
And give encouragement
To her young Sparrow.
Maybe a warning.
That's no mannequin.
It's human. Hurry,
Flap those wings and fly.
