How to pick your college classes

Choosing college courses is like playing the lottery, some students choose a particular class because it seems easy, others because it's a requirement for their major. There is nothing wrong with selecting classes with this method, but it can lead to an extended stay at college, not to speak of additional cost. If you happen to be one of those students yet to make a firm decision on what major you will pursue, nailing down what classes to take each semester may be equally challenging. Hashing it all out with and adviser before each registration period is a good idea and can make the whole process much smoother.

The college adviser is responsible for insuring students are enrolling in the right courses to meet graduation requirements for the various degree programs offered. It only makes sense to put their expertise to work for you as you map out your courses each semester. Students, of course, have access to course schedule, but a counselors expertise makes navigating through it to get a student set up for the right classes seem pretty easy. They can also instantly check that each course carries the prescribed units and any other criterion relating to a specific major or degree. All to often, students find themselves approaching graduation only to find themselves a few units short of getting their diploma. Another thing to consider is prerequisites which an adviser will know about.

If you are unable to get an appointment with your counselor or are still undecided about your major, the best way to pick your courses is by choosing ones that look appealing to you. If you have trouble finding anything of interest, try out some low level courses in core subjects such as math, science and English. You are ultimately going to need these classes anyway, no matter what degree program you end up in. You might also choose to take two or three electives, which could include, art, physical fitness, music, accounting , dance, automotive or some other subject of interest to you. In college there are a plethora of opportunities to help you decide what career field you might be interested in pursuing.

Registration at most colleges today is fast becoming an on-line process. This can make getting signed up, particularly for the freshman semester, simpler to some, but generally more confusing to most. Sometimes you can even end up registering for a course you did not intend to take, due to a similarity in course numbers. Although, once you have been through this process it only gets easier with each new semester. The key to picking college courses that suit you however, is by going over your schedule with a college counselor, or taking a few low level courses with one or two different electives each semester.

College is certainly one of the most important things you will do in life and likely a period you will one day look back upon as the most fun. In the final analysis, it comes down to what you want to get out of it, the courses you select and the effort you put forth in achieving your goals.
