Contrary to popular belief, prayer can be a very useful skill in Runescape, especially at its higher levels. A high prayer level can act as a deadly secret weapon to dangerous monsters. Prayers can also protect you from harm and perform various other tasks. Prayer is undoubtedly a tedious and time-consuming skill to train by itself, and at its lower levels, it is not very useful. However, players who build it up will often find it very useful in combat and in unexpected situations.
In order to gain prayer experience, you need to bury bones. Almost all monsters in Runescape drop some kind of bone upon death. Common animals, like chickens, sheep, and cows, and common enemies, like men, farmers, and guards, drop regular bones, which give 4.5 experience points when buried. Monkeys drop monkey bones, which give 5 experience points when buried. Greater demons drop burnt bones, which give 5 experience points when buried. Giants and ogres drop big bones, which give 15 experience points when buried. Obviously, there are many types of bones, and those from more difficult opponents give more experience. To bury a bone, just click on it in your inventory.
There is a very simple process to using prayers. To access your prayers, click on the four-pointed silver star icon on your screen. The prayers you can use are colored in, the prayers you cannot use yet are blacked out, and the prayers that you are currently using are lit up. When you use a prayer, your prayer points will gradually decline until they reach zero, at which point you will not be able to use any prayers. You can use more than one prayer, but this will make your points decline at a faster rate. When all of your points are depleted, you can recharge them instantly by praying at an altar.
For the seasoned player, there are many different prayers to choose from. There are various prayers that will boost your defense, strength, attack, ranged, or magic ability. Some let you restore hitpoints faster, and some protect you from different types of attack, like magic and melee. There are several other, miscellaneous prayers as well, like one that allows you to keep an extra item if you die.
If you are new to the prayer skill and specifically want to train it, start by killing small animals. Chickens are best because they only have three hitpoints until they are dead. You will be able to kill many chickens in a short amount of time. Pick up the bones from each chicken and bury them. (hint: this is also a good time
