Twenty years back, did you ever imagine doing your research and reading a 500-paged text book in a coffee shop, minus the bulky paperback? The advent of portable ebook reader systems now makes this more convenient.

An ebook is an ultra-lightweight device that allows you to read books, magazines, newspapers in their electronic form. Since the release of the first ebook in 1990, the public welcomed this technology with open arms proof of which is the high demand of portable ebook readers in the digital market today.

The early models of ebook reader were not as light weight as the current models. Screen displays were also not as clear as those with today's E ink technology. However, the client demands and reviews made it possible for ebook reader manufacturers to improve the product's features into what we now have at present. The more popular models are the Amazon Kindle, Sony's PRS 500 and iPod touch ebook reader.

Despite its popularity, ebook readers may seem to be a ludicrous buy for some people. Here are some reasons why getting an ebook reader is worth your every penny.

People who own an ebook reader cannot stop raving about its portability. An ebook normally weighs around 10 oz or less than 4 pounds. With an ebook reader, you can read your favorite novel on a train, plane ride or pretty much anywhere and anytime you feel like reading. Once you drown yourself in reading, you will not notice time fly by. Now this is perfect for the jet-setters and people who want to kill time by reading.

Developers of the ebook gave much thought to its usability. The buttons, QWERTY keys and controls are quite intuitive you do not need to consult the manual for basic operations. In 3rd quarter of 2008, Sony released its latest ebook reader, the Sony PRS-700 that comes with a touch screen technology. Aside from the clear screen display, ebook reader's text size can be increased or decreased with just a few clicks of a button.

Aside from storing novels, textbooks and magazines, some ebook models allow you to connect to the internet and download newspapers, magazines and more books in a matter of seconds. Amazon's Kindle includes a wireless technology that connects the ebook reader to the cyberspace in an instant, free of charge. It's like stepping inside a library, a bookstore or a newspaper stand in an instant.

Portable ebook readers also have a search function that lets you search for words and phrases. Gone are the days when you check the table of contents of index for topics or keywords. With ebook readers, you just need to type in the word or phrases you are looking for and the program will flip the pages for you.

The popularity of electronic books gave way to the development of ebook readers. The present day ebook reader models have become more portable and more convenient for the public. If you haven't decided yet on what brand to get, a lot of product reviews by real ebook reader owners are out these in the internet.
