Energy levels: Increasing and sustaining

by Nerissa Miller

Created on: July 22, 2009

You need all the energy you can get to handle the stress at work, manage household chores, and taking care of the people you love. Do you find 24 hours insufficient? Or do you feel that you could have accomplished more in a day if only you have more energy? You need to revitalise yourself, feel energetic again, and sustain your energy level by watching the following areas:

Medical condition

Consult a doctor to ensure that your low energy level is not due to any medical condition.

Get sufficient sleep

Get sufficient and quality sleep. Use eye mask if necessary; make sure you have a comfortable bed, and sleeping environment that is conducive for resting.

Caffeine

A cup of coffee can boost your energy level, but watch out for the withdrawal syndrome that may result in fatigue after a few hours. Do not consume drinks that contain caffeine at night as that may prevent you from getting a good sleep.

Water

Dehydration may result in reduction in energy level. Make sure you consume at least 8 glasses of water a day, and increase your consumption before, and after your exercise. Food that contains high water contents such as watermelon, and cucumbers, can help you gain more energy.

Eat proper meals

Do not skip meals, especially breakfast. A good breakfast is important, to ensure that you get a good energy boost right from the morning hours. Check out the glycemic food index for clearer picture on food you should consume that can help you sustain your energy level.

Consume fish

Essential fatty acids, will help you stay alert, thus you should consume more food such as oily fish, avocados, and nuts to help boost your energy level.

Exercise

Do some stretching exercise when you have time during lunch or tea break so that your brain can receive sufficient blood flow, hence more oxygen flow to the brain which will reduce your feeling of lethargy.

Regular exercise will also help in blood circulation, and help you maintain a high energy level.

Reduce junk food

Junk food such as potato chips, candy, cookies, and ice cream is high in saturated fats, and reduces oxygen level in your body, thus causing tiredness.

Choose your snacks wisely. Go for fruits, light cheese and yogurt instead if you need to snack between meals.

Constant blood sugar level

Ensure that your blood sugar level remains constant by taking more meals at regular intervals, and in small portions. Heavy meals will make you even sleepier, whilst skipping meals can cause lower blood sugar which will lead to fatigue.

You need to watch out your diet, and lifestyle to be able to maintain a good energy level. By doing so, you can accomplish more at work, and in your daily activities.
