Tips on selecting the appropriate car seat for your child

As soon as you take your baby out of the hospital or birthing clinic, it is required by law that a federally approved car seat should be in place. While children and adults are expected to wear seat-belts when riding any vehicle, child car seats are likewise required at the rear of the car for the safe travel of babies. Unfortunately, seat-belts installed on cars are fit for adults use. This is one of the reasons why child car seats need to be installed. Use of child car seats is required in all fifty states, and only those car seats that pass federal safety guidelines should be used.

Babies and children need specific types of child car seats. Since older children are still relatively small for the car seat-belts, they need booster seats in order for them to be snug fit and safe in their car seats. If you are not that familiar with booster seats, these are the ergonomic types like those in hairdressers that can go up or down.

There are also car seats suited for infants. Take note that car seats for infants are different from those for older children. Infant car seats have received a lot of scrutiny from different sector, specifically on their safety. Aside from this, there are still a number of parents who feel that their lap is the safest place for their babies during travel, which is quite contrary.

Part of the safety considerations when buying a car seat is know which type is best suited for your kid. At present, there are specific child car seats for Newborn, Infant and Toddler.

To differentiate the three, Newborn car seats have the greatest level of protection for babies. They look more like baby bassinets. While it is normally recommended that Newborn car seats should face rear, these types can also face front.

Infant and toddler seats look more like regular car seats, but only smaller so as to fit your little ones. To make sure you child is safe and snug fit, these types of child car seats have harnesses to secure the child in his seat. The configuration of the harnesses is also quite complicated, which takes into consideration that amount of impact in the unlikely event of accident or crash.

When installing the child car seat, make sure to read the instruction manual that comes with the product. There are even child car seat retailers who will show you how to install their product in your car. Before buying any child car seat make sure that your child car seat is compatible with the seat-belt configuration of your car.

Even after initial installation, it is always best to check how the child car seat is mounted every time you use it. Make sure that the straps and seat-belts are tightly locked such that the child car seat is not too loose or wobbly. To check if the child car seat is securely fastened, pull on the seat as if the car has been into a collision. If the child car seat is displaced, then you need to tighten it up.

To help you decide on the right child car seat and how it is properly installed, visit your local motoring shop. They have experts who can give free advice on your child car seat purchase.

Every year, car crashes claim the lives of many children, which could have been prevented only with proper restraint. Thus, choosing the right child car seat will make your every trip safe and convenient for you and your kid.
